Ready To Learn

I’m not ready …

Words I heard the young child say to their parent from the top of the rope ladder in the park.

There are definitely times we want - and need - to be ready before we act. Stepping from the rope ladder on to the wooden tower may be one of them.

There are other situations, though, where not ready becomes a reason (excuse?) for not starting.

In his book, Do The Work, writer Steven Pressfield states (multiple times): start before you’re ready.

Advice that aligns with a curious, experimental and adventurous approach to work and life. It is a rare occasion that we face true danger, or disastrous outcomes from actions that go awry. Most times, what we see as a failure or disaster is the story we tell ourselves.

When we’re seeking something new, or different, starting can often be the most difficult part.

It’s time to rewrite the script that says we need to be more prepared, organised, skilled, older, wiser, richer, or [fill in the blank] before we begin. The sooner we start, the sooner these things can become a reality.

Start before you’re ready. After all, we’re always ready to learn.
