Mundane Magic

The mundane is not as ordinary as we might believe.

We live in a fast-moving, excitement-oriented world. Technology, (relative) wealth, and consumerism have offered us an escape from all that we’ve labelled common and dull.

I wonder what we have lost along the way.

In his work, psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi talks of micro flow moments. Our ability to be absorbed and fully present, finding interest and joy in routine, everyday tasks has a multitude of benefits.

There’s a reason that we have great ideas in the shower. There’s a reason we feel a boost after taking the dog for a walk. There’s a reason we think clearly after decluttering our desk, or desktop.

The mundane is vital for innovation, connection, and overall wellbeing.

Slowing down, seeking calm amidst the chaos, and relishing an everyday task may well be the most un-ordinary thing we could do today.

As we wrap up another working week, I’m curious where the mundane might help you.
