Invisible Progress
Invisible progress
can be a challenge.
When we see the results of our efforts take shape in full view it feels good. Accomplishment. Satisfaction. Motivation. We see it; we feel it; we are energised to do more of it. Yes, that’s the joy of visible progress.
Much of what we do in our work and life is of the invisible progress kind. Incremental and indiscernible.
Our progress is made through the regular practice, iteration upon iteration, and continuous learning and growth. It is the kind of progress that only becomes visible when the final building block is placed. It is the kind of progress that often has us wondering if it is making a difference. It is the kind of progress that is often unmeasurable (no matter how hard we try).
Invisible progress can have us stuck, lose motivation, and/or give up.
We can spend inordinate amounts of time and energy trying to put measures and controls in place. Many the workplace fall folly to this elusive (and illusive) practice.
We can though shine a light on some of our invisible progress. We can look for ways to illuminate the regular practice, the learnings and change. We can continually become more comfortable that this is what progress looks like, even though we cannot see it. We can trust that progress will happen, and that the invisible will ultimately be visible.
I’m curious how you shine a light on the invisible progress you are making.
