Wrong Turns
I went the wrong way …
These were the words from my (flustered) friend as they sat down, and began a story about reliance on GPS, poorly designed maps, and their long-time concern about getting lost when driving.
Of course, it is not only driving that can have us worried about getting things wrong. We are taught to have 100% accuracy, knowledge, certainty before we do anything in many parts of our work and life. Despite being a fallacy, perfection is something we’ve been taught to seek at all times.
As Rick Rubin writes in The Creative Act, ‘taking a wrong turn allows you to see landscapes you wouldn’t otherwise have seen.’
Perhaps it is time to put ourselves in the pathway of new ideas and innovation by letting go of the fear of a wrong turn. When we accidentally, or curiously find ourselves going a different way, we never know what we might discover, don’t you agree?!
