Spend The Afternoon

“Spend the [_______]. You can’t take it with you.”

Most would assume the missing word is money. 

We are used to this saying, and somewhat comfortable with the notion.

In this quote from author Annie Dillard, the missing word is afternoon.

Spend the afternoon.

After all, time as with money is something we cannot take with us. In the here and now, it is up to us to spend our time as we choose. 

Weekends are a good time to practice spending our afternoons; I hope you’re spending yours well.
