Every Action Counts
Every action counts.
As I approach the end of the week participating in the great Aussie Bird Count, a citizen-science project from Birdlife Australia, I’m again struck by how easy it is to contribute to things that make a difference.
A quick peruse of the app shows over 4 million birds have been counted across the country.
I feel connected to others when I see the map covered in bird counts, and when I zoom in and see those who have contributed checklists in my neighbourhood, I am curious to know if they had galahs visit their garden, too.
The activity is fun. It gets me outside during breaks in my work days. It has me learning and discovering. It is an easy and meaningful thing to be a part of.
And, it makes a difference to those who use the data to understand, advocate for and protect our bird life here.
As one of the greatest advocates for our natural world, the late Dr Jane Goodall said: what you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.
This week, for me, it is counting birds.
I wonder what might be next …
