Blocks Of Time

The day disappeared …

Whenever I have this feeling I’m reminded of a (now) old blog post from Tim Urban on Wait But Why where he represented the awake time in our days on a 10 x 10 grid representing 10 minute blocks.

Ever since visualising this grid as a representation of my days, I have found it a useful way to reflect back on where time went. Especially on the days where life happens.

To be able to metaphorically colour in the blocks for tasks and activities helps to look back on the day with self-compassion and understanding, gratitude and joy, and where necessary, a determination to be more intentional and focused in the future.

As I reflect on the ‘extra’ blocks I coloured in to spend valuable time with family on a Sunday afternoon, it becomes easier to let go of ‘where did the day go’ type feelings to the enjoyment of doing something with the people I love.

Our relationship with time is often a vexed topic, and as much as we can be more intentional and focused, it is worth balancing with the understanding we are humans, not machines.

So, like me, if you’re wondering where the day disappeared to, perhaps it’s time to colour in the blocks and find out.
